Count the right kind of days

Know when you need elapsed dates, calendar days, or working days—and check the endpoints.

Use Date range to understand the span between dates. Business days counts Monday–Friday workdays and can skip OPM federal holidays. Date range shows both elapsed days and the inclusive weekday/weekend breakdown.

Illustrated example: two weekends + one observed Monday holiday + four PTO days make a nine-day break. A paid company Friday reduces the PTO cost to three.

Choose the question before the calculator

A calendar span and a working-day count answer different questions. A Saturday-to-Sunday trip includes weekend dates; a work deadline may exclude them. The same endpoints can therefore give different, valid totals.

Make the boundaries explicit

Date range shows “days apart” as the elapsed distance and “Counting both ends” as a separate inclusive breakdown. The same start and end date is zero days apart but still one calendar date.

Business days uses Monday–Friday. Its between-dates count includes both endpoints when they are workdays. The Skip OPM federal holidays checkbox excludes covered federal holidays; it does not offer a custom workweek or an endpoint toggle.

  1. Enter the start and end dates.
  2. For a span, compare days apart with Counting both ends in Date range.
  3. For workdays, choose between dates or N workdays before / after Start.
  4. Choose whether to skip OPM federal holidays and inspect the explanation.

Use the count with the right rule

A contractual, legal, banking, or delivery deadline may use a special definition of business days. DateXLife does not determine that rule for you. Match the settings to the rule you have been given and confirm important deadlines with the responsible party.

Date range is also useful as a cross-check when a PTO window looks longer than expected: count the dates in the whole break, then separate the working days from the days that were already free.

Questions, answered

Why do two day counters disagree by one?

Check whether they include the start date, the end date, or both. Endpoint conventions often explain a one-day difference.
